Turtle - An overview

Detailed Instructions:

Begin first by discussing all of the key points of the Shell as a defensive posture. Allow the class to test the integrity of each other’s Shell.

  • Elbows & Hip Crease

  • Head Position

  • Proper Base (Hip Position)

  • Seal Feet vs Active Toes

Next, we will show a couple of examples of how to Turtle vs basic guard passes.

  • Leg Toss

  • Knee Cut

  • Torreando?

Okay, so I got to Shell, now what? Here are some basic things to look to do:

  • The Telles, a simple shinbox from Shell that functions as a reguard. Great to use when the opponent is biasing to one side and has no decent attachments

  • Roll through to legs or guard. This can be used when opponent commits one leg directly behind you. Watch out for counter-bolo!

  • Win a handfight, stand up, pull guard, or reverse with it

  • Looking for single legs should they move too far towards the top of the clock.

Micro Drills:

  1. Shell Testing - Looking for underhooks and crossface specifically, repommel if broken

  2. Turtle vs Passes - reps

  3. Telles, Roll Through, Handfight, Single Legs - reps

Live Drills:

  1. Warm Up - Handfighting Drills. Fight for 2:1 grip, allow partner to strip it and return to neutral. From Standing, from Seated vs Passing.

  2. FYJJ - Turtle vs Active Passer (Turtle Player wins)
