10th Planet Warm Ups F Series: Butterfly Guard
This is a tough one for me. Don’t like playing this stuff.
We will do an F3 variation that I’ll turn into an infinity flow for them
Planned Curriculum - Introduction to Open Guard and Kuzushi
Hat Tips
Lachlan Giles
Priit Mihkelson
Dante Leon
Why do I play Open Guard?
Two Main learning objectives
Win the first engagement
Immediately threaten with Kuzushi
Lecture: Positioning Associated with the Open Guard
Playing a seated guard vs a supine guard
Playing sideways vs playing level Supine
Advantages/Disadvantages of playing on elbow
How to track your opponent (forwards, back, side to side)
Micro Drilling - Movement Mirroring
Have partners walk slowly around their partner’s guard and allow the guard player to track them with movement. Have them try from a seated position, from a supine position, and on the elbow.
Lecture: Winning the first engagement/Establishing DLR
Seated Entries (Aggressive)
They step in like an idiot
Seated Guard pull in (Inside Hand gripping knee, Outside hand gripping ankle)
You win a grip fight
2:1 Wrist & Elbow
Supine Entries (Reactive)
They step into a pummel storm
We foot pummel off of their grips into a connection
On Elbow Entries
We strip grips and reverse them to force connection
Micro Drilling
Partners will engage such that the Top Player is attempting to gain asymmetrical grips and force a Toreando passing scenario. Bottom players will be attempting to get to a DLR guard
Lecture: Kuzushi immediately follows connection
Bolo Sweep
Tripod Sweep
Wrestle Up
Live Drills: Kuzushi from DLR
Top player attempts to maintain balance only, not allowed to strip connections from Bottom Player
Bottom player tries to force Top Player’s hands or butt to the mat.
